Data We Collect
None.
- The extension collects, stores, and shares no personal data. It has no accounts and no servers of its own.
- The extension sends no analytics or telemetry. (The calmnewtab.com website is a separate case — see below.)
- The extension does not read your browsing history. It only replaces the new tab page.
Permissions
- No Chrome permissions: Calm New Tab requests no special Chrome permissions (no identity, no geolocation, no storage permission). It only overrides the new tab page and makes the network requests described below.
- Approximate location via IP: with the weather widget on (on by default), the extension asks
freeipapi.comto resolve your public IP address to an approximate city. The request itself reveals your IP address; the response (city and approximate coordinates) is cached locally for 24 hours and used only to fetch weather.
Third-Party Services
- Pexels (via a Cloudflare Worker proxy) — to pick video backgrounds, the extension sends scene keywords (e.g. "ocean", "forest") to a small proxy that holds the Pexels API key. No personal data is attached. Videos stream directly from Pexels servers.
- freeipapi.com — resolves your IP address to an approximate city and coordinates for the automatic-location weather mode (see Permissions). The lookup result is cached locally for 24 hours.
- Weather providers — your approximate or manually chosen coordinates are sent to Open-Meteo (worldwide default), MET Norway, or weather.gov (US) to get current conditions. In manual mode, the city name you type goes to the Open-Meteo geocoding service.
- Google Fonts — the new tab page loads its fonts from Google's font servers; like any web request, this exposes your IP address to Google.
Data Storage
Settings, weather and location caches, and video caches are stored locally in your browser using localStorage and IndexedDB. Nothing is synced to a Google account — the extension has no servers, so nothing leaves your device except the requests described above. Clearing your browser's site data removes everything.
About this website
This landing page (calmnewtab.com) is a regular website and — unlike the extension — uses analytics: Google Analytics 4, Meta Pixel, and Umami. These apply to the website only, never to the extension.
Children's Privacy
This extension does not knowingly collect data from anyone, including children under 13.
